Psychiatry - November 2008 - (Page 53) [journal watch] Concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and cholinesterase inhibitors: register-based study of over 700,000 elderly patients. Johnell K, Fastbom J. Drugs Aging. 2008;25(10):871–877. Synopsis: Authors used data from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register to investigate anticholinergic drug use among users and non-users of cholinesterase inhibitors. Based on the results, they conclude that although anticholinergic drugs may antagonize the effect of cholinesterase inhibitors, anticholinergic drug use is more common among cholinesterase inhibitor users than non-users. PMID: 18808211 2008;12(3):208–218. Synopsis: To examine the nature, extent and correlates of nonsuicidal self injury in a nonclinical sample of young adults, authors analyzed selfreport questionnaires completed by 211 participants 18 to 30 years of age. They found that almost half (43.6%) of the participants reported engaging in nosuicidal self injury, and those individuals reported greater psychopathology, avoidant coping and alcohol use than those who did not self-injure. PMID: 18576202 Childhood sexual abuse and nonsuicidal self injury: metaanalysis. Klonsky ED, Moyer A. Br J Psychiatry. 2008 Mar;192(3):166–170. Review. Synopsis: Authors conducted a meta-analysis of the literature to determine the degree of association between childhood sexual abuse and self-injurious behavior, but found the relationship to be relatively small. PMID: 18310572 Self injury: a research review for the practitioner. Klonsky ED, Muehlenkamp JJ. J Clin Psychol. 2007 Nov;63(11):1045–1056. Review. Synopsis: Authors reviewed the literature and summarize in this article the empirical research on who self injures, why people self injure, and what treatments have demonstrated effectiveness. PMID: 17932985 Characteristics and functions of nonsuicidal self injury in a community sample of adolescents. Lloyd-Richardson EE, Perrine N, Dierker L, Kelley ML. Psychol Med. 2007 Aug;37(8):1183–1192. Epub 2007 Mar 12. Synopsis: To assess the prevalence, associated clinical characteristics, and functions of nonsuicidal self injury in a community sample of adolescents, researchers analyzed the results of anonymous surveys completed by 633 adolescents. Based on the results, they conclude that adolescents in the community reported high rates of nonsuicidal self injury, which they used to influence others and manage internal emotions. PMID: 17349105 Risk for suicide attempts among adolescents who engage in nonsuicidal self injury. Muehlenkamp JJ, Gutierrez PM. Arch Suicide Res. 2007;11(1):69–82. Synopsis: Authors studied 540 high school students to examine whether indicators of suicide risk differ between adolescents engaging in nonsuicidal self injury who have and have not attempted suicide. Based on the results, they conclude that these two groups can be differentiated on measures of suicidal ideation, reasons for living, and depression. PMID: 17178643 NONSUICIDAL SELF INJURY AND ADOLESCENTS An exploratory study of correlates, onset, and offset of nonsuicidal self injury. Deliberto TL, Nock MK. Arch Suicide Res. 2008;12(3):219–231. Synopsis: Authors conducted an exploratory study of 64 adolescents with a history of nonsuicidal self injury and 30 matched controls. They found, among other things, that nonsuicidal self injury was associated with a family history of suicidal ideation, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, the presence of inutero complications, the occurrence of noninjurious repetitive behaviors during childhood, and endorsement of a homosexual or bisexual orientation, but not with more general forms of psychopathology. PMID: 18576203 The nature and extent of nonsuicidal self injury in a nonclinical sample of young adults. Hasking P, Momeni R, Swannell S, Chia S. Arch Suicide Res. DEPRESSION AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE Depression and Coronary Heart Disease. Recommendations for Screening, Referral, and Treatment.
