Psychiatry - November 2008 - (Page 54) [journal watch] Lichtman JH, Bigger JT Jr, Blumenthal JA, et al. Circulation. 2008 Sep 29. Synopsis: Authors of this multispecialty consensus document review the evidence linking depression with coronary heart disease and recommend options for assessment, referral, and treatment of depression. PMID: 18824640 Depression and anxiety symptoms affect change in exercise capacity during cardiac rehabilitation. Egger E, Schmid JP, Schmid RW, Saner H, von Känel R. Eur J Cardiovasc Prev Rehabil. 2008 Sep 20. Synopsis: Researchers investigated exercise capacity, body mass index (BMI), and symptoms of depression and anxiety before and after cardiac rehabilitation in 114 patients with coronary artery disease to study whether symptoms of depression and anxiety would affect changes in these factors. They found that exercise capacity increased, symptoms of depression and anxiety decreased, and BMI did not change with rehabilitation, and conclude that symptoms of depression and anxiety affected change in exercise capacity during cardiac rehabilitation. PMID: 18813026 Changes in depression in the immediate postdischarge phase in a cardiac rehabilitation population assessed by the cardiac depression scale. Davidson PM, Salamonson Y, Webster J, et al. J Cardiopulm Rehabil Prev. 2008 SepOct;28(5):312–315; quiz 316–317. Synopsis: Authors report on the results of administration of the Hare-Davis Cardiac Depression Scale (CDS) to 151 patients as part 54 Psychiatry 2008 [ N O V E M B E R ] of routine assessment and monitoring of outcomes in a sixweek outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program. Based on the results, they conclude that cardiac rehabilitation had a positive impact on CDS scores at six weeks and 12 months, although there was a trend for increased scores at one year. Synopsis: Authors discuss the effects of psychosocial stress on cardiovascular health, mechanisms for those effects, and options for psychosocial support. PMID: 18775114 Association between anxiety and factors of coagulation and fibrinolysis. Geiser F, Meier C, Wegener I, et al. Psychother Psychosom. 2008;77(6):377–383. Epub 2008 Aug 21. Synopsis: To study hemostasis function as a mechanism for how psychological stress and anxiety activate coagulation and fibrinolysis, causing risk for cardiovascular diseases, authors analyzed results of questionnaires completed by 29 anxiety patients and 29 health controls. They found that while anxiety patients scored higher in a composite hemostatic score and a sum score of fibrinolysis in comparison to the control group, the psychological variable with the closest association to hemostasis was not trait anxiety, but worry about blood drawing prior to blood sampling. Authors conclude that fear of blood drawing as a trigger for the coagulation and fibrinolysis system could be one mediating factor for the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in this population. Cultur Divers Ethnic Minor Psychol. 2007 Apr;13(2):125–133. Synopsis: To examine the impact of heightened awareness of race as a social construct on the relationship between racial stereotypes and performance, authors discuss the findings of four studies: (1) multiracial individuals reported less belief in the idea that race biologically determines ability, (2) multiracial individuals showed stereotype inhibition in reaction to race salience, while monoracial individuals showed stereotype activation, (3) Asian/White and Black/White multiracial individuals were less susceptible to racial stereotypes than monoracial individuals, and multiracial individuals did not show significant performance changes in reaction to race salience while monoracial participants did, and (4) emphasizing the social construction of race buffers individuals from stereotype threat effects. PMID: 17500601 Family identity: black-white interracial family health experience. Byrd MM, Garwick AW. J Fam Nurs. 2006 Feb;12(1):22–37. Synopsis: In this interpretive descriptive study, authors describe how eight Black-White couples with 54
