Email: jamiesi@aspirus.org www.aspirus.org school-age children constructed their interracial family identity and interpreted race to their children. The core theme described by the couples was “coming together,” and four major tasks emerged: understanding and resolving family of origin chaos and turmoil, transcending Black-White racial history, articulating the interracial family’s racial standpoint, and explaining race to biracial children across the developmental stages. PMID: 16443995 The relationship among ethnic identity, psychological well being, and intergroup competence: an investigation of two biracial groups. Suzuki-Crumly J, Hyers LL. Cultur Divers Ethnic Minor Psychol. 2004 May;10(2):137–150. Synopsis: To examine the ethnic identification, psychological well being, and intergroup competence of biracial individuals, researchers used a self-identification measure with 66 Black/White and Asian/White individuals. They found that participants were most likely to be biculturally identified and least likely to be nonidentified. They also found that psychological well being and intergroup anxiety varied as a function of identity. PMID: 15099180 Black identity in biracial black/white people: a comparison of Jacqueline who refuses to be exclusively black and Adolphus who wishes he were. Gillem AR, Cohn LR, Throne C. Cultur Divers Ethnic Minor Psychol. 2001 May;7(2):182–196. Synopsis: Authors use the case study method with two biracial college freshmen, both of whom identify as Black, who were chosen from a larger sample of participants, to illustrate differences in how biracial individuals may reach racial identity resolution, to show how identifying as Black can have different meanings and consequences, to help differentiate Black racial identity development from biracial Black/White racial identity development, and to describe nonclinical subjective experiences of being biracial in the U.S. PMID: 11381819 Biracial Japanese-American identity: an evolving process. Collins JF. Cultur Divers Ethnic Minor Psychol. 2000 May;6(2):115–133. Synopsis: Author presents the results of a qualitative study of the results of semistructured interviews with 15 individuals (8 men, 20–40 years of age), each with a Japanese and a nonAsian parent, focusing on how Japanese-Americans perceive themselves in relation to other individuals, groups, and their environment. The overarching themes of self evaluation, confusion of categorization, belonging, infusion/exploration, situational use of identity, and resolution/acceptance/self verification were presented by the participants, and authors propose a model of ethnic identity for biracial individuals based on the results. PMID: 10910527 Experiences and processes affecting racial identity development: preliminary results from the biracial sibling project. Root MP. Cult Divers Ment Health. 1998;4(3):237–247. Synopsis: Author studied 20 sibling pairs, discusses the four types of experiences that appear to influence the identity process— hazing, family dysfunction, other salient identities, and the impact of integration—and explores these experiences within the framework of the ecological model of racial identity development.
