Psychiatry - November 2008 - (Page 8) Editor’s Message Issue Highlights, November 2008 Dear Colleagues: Welcome to the November issue of Psychiatry 2008. In this month’s Adverse Events column, Jayaram describes the importance of establishing screening criteria to identify what constitutes an adverse event and how it impacts a facility. She suggests that using several layers of screening (e.g., database of self-reported events, chart audits, examination of trends, and statistics) may be necessary in order to determine the impact of an adverse event, and calls for an investment of time and attention by service or hospital leadership to effect change. Self injury in adolescents was previously believed to be a characteristic of severe psychopathology, but research now shows that it is actually associated with a wide variety of externalizing and internalizing conditions. In this issue of the journal, Peterson and colleagues describe these conditions as well as the characteristics of nonsuicidal self injury (NSSI) behavior in adolescents. The authors provide a case example to illustrate how NSSI is be used by some adolescents to cope with distressing negative affective states, especially anger and depression, and mixed emotional states. The authors describe effective treatment strategies that may include psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and the building of coping skills for each individual patient. Next, Alva and Cummings review the relative tolerability of several Alzheimer’s disease treatments. Direct head-to-head clinical trials for assessing differences in tolerability and efficacy between AD medications have not been performed. Therefore, in this study the authors review and analyze the safety and tolerability of three cholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist memantine based upon manufacturers’ data found in prescribing information (PI) documents. In this month’s Psychotherapy Rounds, Hud-Aleem and Countryman review the similarities and differences between Black and White racial identity development in the United States and address special challenges for the biracial child. A case example is provided and recommendations for treatment in therapy are reviewed. Next, Sansone and Sansone, in their Interface column, review recent literature on the possible relationships between (a) depression and the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and (b) comorbid depression and adverse CVD outcomes. The authors also discuss the role antidepressants may have in the treatment of depression and CVD. Finally, we are pleased to offer a new quarterly column in this issue of journal on a topic that is important to anyone in the field of medicine: risk management. This column will be in a Q & A format with questions from our readership answered by risk management experts. We hope you find the column helpful, and we hope you will submit questions for future installments of the column. As always, we welcome your feedback on anything we publish in the journal.
