Turk DC, Swanson KS, Tunks ER. Can J Psychiatry. 2008 Apr;53(4):213–223. Review. Synopsis: Authors review the psychological models used to conceptualize chronic pain— psychodynamic, behavioral (respondent and operant), and cognitive-behavioral—and discuss treatments based on these models, such as insight, external reinforcement, motivational interviewing, relaxation, meditation, biofeedback, guided imagery, and hypnosis. PMID: 18478824 The nonspecific effects of group-based cognitivebehavioural treatment of chronic pain. Newton-John TR, Geddes J. Chronic Illn. 2008 Sep;4(3):199–208. Synopsis: In this paper, authors propose a number of nonspecific treatment factors—outcomes that stem from the process of treatment rather than from the treatment itself—likely to be associated with positive outcomes in cognitivebehavioral therapy pain management programs. They also discuss how these factors might be manipulated to maximize treatment effectiveness. PMID: 18796509 Can exposure and acceptance strategies improve functioning and life satisfaction in people with chronic pain and whiplashassociated disorders (WAD)? A randomized controlled trial. Wicksell RK, Ahlqvist J, Bring A, et al. Cogn Behav Ther. 2008;37(3):169–182. Synopsis: In this study, 21 individuals with chronic pain and whiplash-associated disorders were randomized to either receive treatment as usual or to participate in a 10-session program emphasizing values-based exposure and acceptance strategies to improve functioning and life satisfaction. After treatment and at seven-months follow up, authors found significant differences in favor of the treatment group in pain disability, life satisfaction, fear of movements, depression, and psychological inflexibility, with no change in either group in pain intensity. PMID: 18608312 Acceptance and values-based action in chronic pain: a study of treatment effectiveness and process. Vowles KE, McCracken LM. J Consult Clin Psychol. 2008 Jun;76(3):397–407. Synopsis: Researchers investigated the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy in the treatment of chronic pain, and examined two processes from this model (acceptance and valuesbased action), by analyzing outcomes of 171 individuals who completed an interdisciplinary treatment program. They found that pain, depression, pain-related anxiety, disability, medical visits, work status, and physical performance showed significant improvements, with 75 percent of patients demonstrating improvement in at least one key domain. They also found that increases in acceptance and valuesbased action were associated with improvements in the primary outcome domains. PMID: 18540733 [VOLUME 5, PAIN MANAGEMENT AND ANTIDEPRESSANTS Depression and osteoarthritis. Lin EH. Am J Med. 2008 Nov;121(11 Suppl 2):S16–S19. Synopsis: Author discusses the association between depression and osteoarthritis, including results from a large clinical trial, current approaches to management of depression and arthritis, results of a pilot study of both depression and pain in elderly patients with osteoarthritis, and a randomized trial currently under way to evaluate effectiveness of a combined pain and depression intervention using pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies. PMID: 18954588 Duloxetine for neuropathic pain based on recent clinical trials. Fishbain D, Berman K, Kajdasz DK. Curr Pain Headache Rep. 2006 Jun;10(3):199–204. Review. Synopsis: In this paper, authors discuss three double-blind, placebocontrolled trials of the efficacy of duloxetine in the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain. PMID: 18778574 Antidepressant use in painful rheumatic conditions. Perrot S, Javier RM, Marty M, et al. Rheum Dis Clin North Am. 2008 May;34(2):433-53. Synopsis: Authors review the pharmacologic and clinical evidence supporting the use of antidepressant drugs for treating painful rheumatologic conditions, including analgesic effects of low-dose tricyclic antidepressants and higher-dose selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, as well as possible side effects such as functional impairment, sleep disorders, and fatigue.
