Psychiatry - December 2008 - (Page 8) Editor’s Message Issue Highlights, December 2008 Dear Colleagues: This month’s “Trend Watch” column examines the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder by comparing antidepressant prescribing by obstetrician/gynecologists to psychiatrists and primary care physicians. An expert commentary on the data is provided by Dr. Uriel Halbreich, who is Director of Biobehavior Research and Professor of Psychiatry and OB/GYN at SUNY in Buffalo, New York. Next, in this month’s “The Interface” column, Sansone and Sansone review tricyclic antidepressants as well as venlafaxine, bupropion, and duloxetine with regards to their use for the treatment of chronic pain. The authors offer an interpretive comparison, as there are few head-to-head comparison studies. Next, Griffith discusses the diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas psychiatrists may face when treating patients who struggle with chronic pain. She reviews, through case examples, a psychotherapeutic approach that may help patients with chronic pain feel supported. Next, Pies and Rogers provide a review on general medical drugs associated with depression. They review the methodological issues in assessing druginduced depression, its epidemiology, and hypotheses concerning its pathophysiology. They conclude with some practical recommendations for PCPs and other physicians. Next, Carroll et al describe the need for a new conceptual understanding of catatonia and propose the concept of katatonia, which describes a group of neuropsychiatric illnesses presenting with catatonic signs, as compared to catatonia, a term that the authors argue has come to inadequately represent, in recent times, simply a specifier of neuropsychiatric illnesses. This review addresses these clinical concepts and attempts to describe katatonia over the past few decades. A new rating scale and a conceptual outline for its clinical entity are also presented. In this month’s “Update on Blood Brain Barrier” column, Yarlagadda and Clayton explore the complicated interactions between neurotransmission, calcium signalling, and thermoregulation resulting from a challenged blood brain barrier in the hypothalamic region of the brain. Finally, in this month’s “Research to Practice” column, Dr. Steve Targum interviews the psychologist, Richard S.E. Keefe, who is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina. Keefe discusses his research on the neurocognitive deficits of schizophrenia and offers his insights into the diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment implications for cognitive assessments in schizophrenia.
