WebSphere Application Server Evolves Today, businesses of all sizes depend on WebSphere Application Server as their platform for deploying applications on the Internet. By combining Internet protocol support, transaction processing, and brokering services into one reliable platform, WebSphere Application Server has become the “killer app” for Internet business. There was no lull after the initial WebSphere announcement in terms of development pace far from it. The development team had been working long hours and continued to do so. But now their efforts were being guided by constant feedback coming from actual customer deployments. This real world acid test was generating feedback that was really helping the team fine tune WebSphere and so it was getting better quickly. IBM was releasing new versions of WebSphere Application Server on a fast-paced six month cycle—amazingly fast for IBM. Sue Wallenborn explains, “We had whole teams of people who were working all day long and into the night. We were going to the local restaurants and bringing in food to feed them. Flowers were being sent to spouses as an apology for their long hours.” The team was motivated because they knew what they were building was important to IBM and that they were fundamentally changing the way businesses would leverage the Internet. The knew they were doing something meaningful something that would make a real difference. And it was then that the vision for the next step in “The ‘Web’ in WebSphere was really formed with the help of IBM Research, the Internet Division, and early adopter companies like eBay.” —Jerry Cuomo, IBM WebSphere CTO, Fellow, and Vice President But it wasn’t always like this Starting in 1998, WebSphere Application Server was in the marketplace and increasingly being adopted by IBM customers including Charles Schwab, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Spanish Bank la Caxia, and eBay, to name a few. Every senior IBM engineer on the project would spend day after day at customer sites really understanding their critical business needs and feeding those needs back to the development team. Both IBM and customers were learning more everyday. 1998 The Athena Space Probe finds frozen water on the moon. 1998 The IBM team continues to refine WebSphere Application Server based on actual customer feedback. IBM sent flowers to the spouses of those who were working long hours on the development of WebSphere. 17
