WebSphere Revolution - (Page 25) Beyond the Application Server Today’s businesses are able to build a sophisticated new generation of Web-enabled applications fully integrated with workhorse legacy systems on top of the enterprise-class infrastructure provided by WebSphere. At the very core of WebSphere, you will find the WebSphere Application Server. What started out as a stand-alone Web application server has become the bedrock upon which hundreds of other WebSphere middleware offerings have been built. WebSphere Application Server has enabled the WebSphere brand to become a complete set of products that together form a rock-solid and rich foundation. WebSphere is now THE runtime platform of choice enabling scalable and secure Internet commerce, customizable portals, flexible messaging, nimble integration of disparate applications, and the cornerstone of a robust and flexible SOA architecture. These capabilities set IBM apart from the competition and that is why WebSphere is one of the most recognizable software brands in the industry. WebSphere is driving business fully into the Internet era. But it wasn’t always like this In the early days, WebSphere was not a brand. It was the product name for IBM’s stand-alone Web application server. But WebSphere was destined to become much more than that. WebSphere Application Server was IBM’s “beachhead” in the emerging e-business software marketplace. By the year 2000, WebSphere was gaining traction and market share was growing. WebSphere Application Server was named Network Magazine’s “Product of the Year” beating out its competitors. Customers were increasingly using WebSphere Application Server as a foundation upon which to build other software and interestingly, IBM started doing the same thing. That is, IBM began developing its own set of middleware products that run on top of WebSphere Application Server as a way to expand the WebSphere brand. Why not? What better way to deliver more value to customers than by “Customers really pushed us they pushed us with scenarios where they were using WebSphere in ways we had never seen before what a whirlwind that was.” —Craig Hayman, IBM Vice President of WebSphere 2000 The first crew arrives at the International Space Station. 2000 WebSphere Application Server is named “Product of the Year” by Network Magazine. 2000 The human genome is deciphered—expected to revolutionize medicine. 25
