It was the product name for IBM’s stand-alone Web application server. But WebSphere was destined to become much more than that. WebSphere Application Server was IBM’s “beachhead” in the emerging e-business software marketplace. By the year 2000, WebSphere was gaining traction and market share was growing. WebSphere Application Server was named Network Magazine’s “Product of the Year” beating out its competitors. Customers were increasingly using WebSphere Application Server as a foundation upon which to build other software and interestingly, IBM started doing the same thing. That is, IBM began developing its own set of middleware products that run on top of WebSphere Application Server as a way to expand the WebSphere brand. Why not?
