Many vital legacy applications have been integrated with new Web-savvy application programs to build out flexible, mission-critical, enterprise IT infrastructures that allow businesses to respond quickly and in meaningful ways to changing market conditions. But by 2002, the term e-business was six years old very old in the fast-paced Internet world. Though IBM had invented the term, the whole industry had been using it to the point that it was becoming diluted and difficult to control. IBM, always wanting to stay ahead of the pack, was looking for the next evolution of this idea. It wanted to build on the powerful e-business concept and take it to the next level. That’s when IBM developed the idea behind “e-business on demand.” e-business On Demand® added the concept of immediacy to the e-business notion. This was significant because change was already happening at breakneck speed and the rate of change itself was increasing. And keeping up with change was essential for a business to thrive or even to survive. The idea of e-business On Demand was to help customers integrate their business processes in such a way that the business could quickly and effectively respond to changing business conditions. This ability to change would give IBM customers a powerful competitive advantage over less nimble competitors.
