WebSphere Revolution - (Page 41) New Flexibility through SOA Today, businesses are moving their enterprise architectures toward the service oriented architecture (SOA) model to achieve dramatic increases in both flexibility and productivity. SOA is more then just an industry buzzword. It is a proven architecture style that combines interchangeable services to build an agile IT infrastructure and agility is vital to businesses of all sizes in the age of the Internet and a rapidly flattening world. The Websphere brand now encompasses over 200 offerings including many central to SOA such as WebSphere Process Server, WebSphere MQ, and WebSphere ESB. Today, WebSphere is the brand of choice for many businesses implementing an SOA and IBM is deeply committed to evolving WebSphere hand in hand with SOA. ing real operational problems. Things just weren’t working. To address this problem, IBM had worked with others in the industry to define the J2EE standard and add J2EE function to WebSphere. But even while that work was underway, the WebSphere team began to realize that there was a better, easier way to allow applications to exchange information. After the On Demand Business model was announced in 2002, more and more businesses began migrating their infrastructures in that direction. The WebSphere family was continuing to expand and gain market share. It had provided a growing set of tools to help businesses become On Demand Businesses. In fact, the very breadth of the WebSphere offerings sometimes made it difficult for the marketing team to clearly communicate all of the capabilities. The development team was continuing to work closely with customers. “We were surprised by how customers were deploying WebSphere,” explains Craig Hayman, IBM Vice President of WebSphere. Customers were handcrafting information exchange using J2EE and it wasn’t easy to do. So the team began to discuss ways to make application integration easier and they came up with an idea.
