To these, the IBM development team added WebSphere Business Monitor and WebSphere Integration Developer. Together these four products embodied IBM’s “model, assemble, deploy, and manage” approach to business process lifecycle management—all of which would be unveiled at the upcoming SOA launch in September 2005. Danske Bank and others from many different industries were early adopters of these tools. WebSphere Process Server was just one of the many WebSphere development efforts underway during this time frame. In fact, there were over 6,000 IBM developers working in IBM labs across 25 countries in the process of doing a major overhaul transforming the WebSphere suite of products into the foundation for SOA. The entire WebSphere product line was being retrofit to deliver the value of SOA to business— a huge undertaking at just the right moment. So with a complete vision and many of the pieces in place, IBM was ready to take SOA to the world. IBM’s SOA message centered on the business value of dramatically increased flexibility, agility, and productivity. SOA was not about monolithic applications but about loosely coupled, reusable modules that could be reconfigured to deliver business flexibility a critical need in today’s rapidly changing business world. IBM was about to fully embrace SOA in a big way as a means of delivering new business value to its customers. That is, IBM was about to bring SOA to life for business and WebSphere would be the centerpiece. Robert LeBlanc, then the General Manager of WebSphere, needed to tell the new WebSphere SOA story. So in March 2005 he asked Sandy Carter to once again join the WebSphere team as Vice President of WebSphere Marketing. Sandy had been critical to the early success of WebSphere and he could count on Sandy to roll out the SOA message with her characteristic vigor and revitalize the WebSphere brand. This was a very important announcement they had to get it absolutely right. Sandy was definitely up for the challenge she was in. Within weeks of Sandy’s arrival, she was on the path of a big SOA launch. The message—SOA offered real business benefits and WebSphere was THE SOA runtime platform of choice. Earlier in the history of WebSphere, IBM was the underdog struggling to come from behind. But this time things were very different. WebSphere was now a well established brand and already the e-business platform of choice for many businesses. This time IBM was playing from a position of strength and leadership helping businesses move ever more quickly into the world of Internet business. So the industry was listening carefully when IBM began to deliver the new SOA message. As Sandy explains, “In September 2005 we connected WebSphere to SOA. That really catapulted the “You can do BPM without SOA we just don’t recommend it.” —Tom Rosamilia, General Manager IBM Application & Integration Middleware Assem Model ble Deploy e Manag 2004 nance & GoverPractices Best 2005 IBM major announcement linking WebSphere to SOA. 2005 Over 6,000 developers work to transform WebSphere for SOA.
