A centerpiece of the announcement was the unveiling of IBM’s SOA Reference Architecture. This was a vendor-neutral plan that businesses could use to help guide their SOA efforts. As Paul Brunet explains, the SOA Reference Architecture was, “An architectural rendition of the types of services organizations need to implement a successful SOA that delivers flexibility and agility required by the business.” IBM used all the traditional methods of communicating SOA and the role of its associated products to the market, but it also used non-traditional ways to spread the SOA message including the posting of three “What is SOA?” videos on YouTube. IBM even made an SOA Hollywood-style movie entitled “Launch” released in 12 languages with a full treatment of sneak peaks, trailers, and outtakes. It played in movie theaters around the world complete with movie posters and popcorn. The Websphere and SOA teams also looked to instill SOA into the minds of future clients by leveraging the IBM Academic Initiative to help foster basic understanding. The idea was to equip and enable professors to prepare students with WebSphere and SOA skills for the workplace. So IBM provided access to software downloads, courseware, and other SOA and WebSphere resources for use in curricula and research. The IBM Academic Initiative was, and still is, a very successful program. More than 650,000 university students were reached though the IBM Academic Initiative in 2007, and over 1.6 million over the last three years—a tenfold increase from when the program was launched in 2004. IBM’s fall 2005 SOA launch was extremely successful in raising awareness and interest in SOA and WebSphere. And, while many businesses were adopting the SOA approach, there were many others who were also interested in SOA but couldn’t quite see how to get started. So IBM began working with its current SOA customers to help define a general framework that businesses could use to get started with SOA. This led to the advent of IBM’s five SOA “entry points” unveiled in the spring of 2006. These entry points provided the context for customer discussions both with IBM and within their own organizations. This approach for getting started with SOA received widespread acclaim from clients, analysts, and the press, and was critical to the success of further imbedding SOA into the thinking and actions of businesses across all industries.
