They wanted to keep the fast-paced monthly release schedule because it helped them maintain a laser focus and so that’s what they did. And underlying it all was IBM’s continued commitment to open standards. As Steve Mills puts it, “All of our core technology decisions from Java, Apache Tomcat, Eclipse, XML, Web services, and open Web 2.0 technologies like RSS, ATOM, and REST have affected the way we market the WebSphere portfolio and driven our brand differentiation. Open standards have helped IBM deliver the messages that have helped drive the WebSphere product family success.” Together, the team’s efforts helped make WebSphere the number one SOA brand and achieve 64 percent market share according to Wintergreen Research, 2008. The momentum was building, the SOA message was being well received, and the business leaders were listening. So now was the time to capitalize on the momentum and spread the SOA message with even more vigor. It was time to take the SOA message to the next level. Sandy decided to orchestrate a structured launch plan that leveraged a new breed of IBM events to build a community and gain attention. First, Sandy’s team organized two major launches per year. Each spring and fall, IBM would introduce customers, press, analysts, media, and business partners to new WebSphere products, services, and strategies. Then, to help build a community and raise awareness around WebSphere and SOA, Sandy’s team organized the first “IMPACT 2007” conference (see sidebar on page 49). IMPACT was a real crescendo to a year and a half of work that began early summer of 2005 and it was a major success. The conference truly had something for everyone. Business executives, technical attendees new to WebSphere, and experienced users found value in these events. The SOA message now had a cadence. Soon, more and more businesses were seeing the value of IBM’s SOA strategy and many other vendors began jumping on the SOA bandwagon. By late 2007, IBM had gained much valuable experience in working with customers to deploy SOA projects all around the world. Based on that experience and a need to separate what they were offering around SOA from competitors pretending to offer SOA, IBM evolved its message to be about Smart SOA. Smart SOA was rolled out in the fall of 2007 and remained the central theme at the 2008 IMPACT conference. Smart SOA encourages businesses to start at the appropriate point along a continuum from the most basic to the most advanced SOA projects based on their current situation and then evolve toward the more complex and higher value projects. By using the Smart SOA approach, businesses maximize both business and IT value by applying principles of simplicity and robustness to every project. Today, Smart SOA is guiding the efforts of many IBM customers.
