In Bloom again Lottie Harward is pain-free and on the move following knee replacement surgery It’s the middle of winter, but Lottie Harward is looking forward to getting back to tending the roses in her yard when spring arrives. And she’ll be able to do that much easier in 2011, thanks to a knee replacement surgery she underwent at Central Carolina Hospital. In the summer of 2009, Lottie had a minor car accident, which didn’t seem at the time to cause her any serious injury. In the following months, however, her knee began bothering her. “The knee just got worse and worse,” she says. “The doctor said it was bone-against-bone, and I needed surgery. I got to a place where I could hardly walk, and I was made willing to have the surgery because I was in so much pain.” “She would just sit here and tears would come out of her eyes,” her husband, Calvin, says. In late July, Lottie underwent surgery with Neil Conti, MD, a Sanford-based orthopedic surgeon on staff at CCH. Lottie gets around using a cane, but the operative part of the statement is “gets around.” After seven weeks of rehab she returned to regular activity rather quickly. “I don’t have to wear a brace and there’s no pain. I haven’t had to take any of my pain medica- Neil Conti, MD, Orthopedic Surgery, tion,” she says. board certified 6 | WINTER 2011
