On the Way to Personalized Cures How cancer becomes a manageable disease T echnology has led to a radical shift in the understanding of cancer over the past decade. With an explosion in new knowledge and the ability to diagnose patients at the most personal genomic level, the future is ripe for more cures to be uncovered on a patient-by-patient basis. BC Cancer Agency researchers have 8 PARTNERS IN DISCOVERY been leaders in redefining cancer as a disease of the individual's genome, discovering critical mutations responsible in ovarian, lymphoid, breast and rare cancers. Trailblazing in the field of precision medicine, the Agency's Personalized Onco-Genomics (POG) Program has made a permanent mark in medical history by finding genomics a place in the clinic. ZURI'S EXPERIENCE Medical leader of POG Dr. Janessa Laskin explains that by studying the genome-the set of instructions for each cell-from DNA to RNA to proteins of everyone's cancer, we will eventually be able to find targets and the drugs that shut down these cancer cells. This approach is what led to Zuri Scrivens' reprieve from metastatic breast cancer. The young mother was still on a new-parent high with her infant son and relishing the accomplishment of completing her first Ride to Conquer Cancer fundraising event when she was diagnosed. Treatment worked initially, but her cancer returned, having spread to her lymph nodes and liver. "Honestly, my world just crumbled," she says. "I thought my life was over and I really wondered if I'd even be here two months from that point."
