Changing 1 2 3 4 5 5 ways nursing careers at Florida Hospital are evolving for the Better Over the past century, the role of nurses at Florida Hospital has changed dramatically. Today, they are not only compassionate, hands-on caregivers, they are highly specialized, technology-savvy inventors. Here are ﬁve ways nursing has evolved and is continuing to change at Florida Hospital. Nurses have always played a vital role in the care of patients, but over the years this role has changed. They now provide more hands-on medical care than ever before through detailed physician orders and processes that have been put in place based on evidencebased practices. With today’s advanced technology, nurses now have access to patient information through handheld PDAs and can receive test results immediately. Those days of waiting for patient records are over. Now, treatments can start sooner and patients can heal faster. From cardiac and oncology to pediatrics and labor and delivery, there are more areas to grow and move between that weren’t available decades ago. Florida Hospital offers degrees in nursing through its very own Florida College of Health Sciences and continuing education through its Center for Nursing Education. Nurses are innovating new processes and products to help patients. At Florida Hospital, nurses are designing, producing, marketing and even patenting products that are aiding in the care and healing of patients. Some recent Florida Hospital nursing innovations include: • A mattress with a built-in egg crate for patient comfort • A specialized shower sleeve that allows patients to shower without getting IVs and saline locks wet • A device that helps organize and keep wires for intensive care unit medical equipment from getting lost, broken and tangled In the near future, nurses expect to have a few additional “hands.” Robots and new technology will allow nurses to spend more time at the patient’s bedside. Programs such as the new interactive system, the GetWell:) Network, which places education and feedback tools at the patient’s ﬁngertips, will help nurses engage patients in their care experience, creating healthier and happier patients.
