Best in Care - Centennial Issue - (Page 12) Imagineering a Chris M. Anderson, MD Disney Children’s Hospital—designed with ‘little heroes’ in mind he place “where dreams come true” and the hospital that exists to heal the mind, body and spirit have united to create a special place for the children in Central Florida and beyond. A special place where children can receive the highest level of medical care while playing, exercising their imaginations and dreaming. Over the course of the next year, the Disney Children’s Hospital at Florida Hospital Orlando will undergo a major renovation and expansion that will provide children and their parents with an entirely new hospital for kids—one that stimulates their senses and sparks hope for a bright and healthy tomorrow. “This is a new era for children’s health care in Central Florida,” says Marla Silliman, senior vice president of Disney Children’s Hospital. “Florida Hospital has cared for children for 100 years and now we are ‘imagineering’ with our physicians, nurses and Walt Disney World a new type of hospital experience that gives each child a sense of trust, hope and belonging.” At the center of the Disney Children’s Hospital is advanced pediatric care. With a group called Kids’ Docs— more than 60 highly trained pediatric subspecialists covering 30 pediatric subspecialties—156 pediatricians and 500 specialty-trained clinical staff members, Disney Children’s Hospital is at the forefront of pediatric medical care and the forefront of making dreams come true. This major renovation and expansion will include a special private entrance and new lobby featuring the Disney classics Little Mermaid, Brother Bear, Jungle Book and Lion King. “Surrounded by characters such as Ariel . and Mufasa, children are the center of their own storybook with their physicians, nurses and families there to help them through their journey,” Silliman says. “We are creating a special healing place. We know that when kids are in an environment that is imaginative and allows them to play and be a kid, their recovery is that much faster. We are designing imagination stations, creative centers and more so that kids can play in jungles, catch butterflies in magical gardens and swim with dolphins under the sea.” Hospital for Kids T Bryan Weidner, MD Meet the New Kids’ Docs Chris M.
