Best in Care - Centennial Issue - (Page 14) GIVING BACK By the Book S Florida Hospital helps Central Florida get healthy ince 1908, the heart and soul of Florida Hospital has been its mission—to extend the healing ministry of Christ—not only through words but by creating healthier communities. Every year Florida Hospital gives back through care for those in need, special programs for those at risk, partnerships with health and social service organizations, and more. With alarming rates of obesity, heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes in Central Florida, Florida Hospital has launched several educational health programs this year to reverse these startling trends and improve the health of the community. This community wellness program is designed to promote healthier lifestyles through education and chronic-disease self-management. Apopka has a higher percentage of people dying from heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes than all of Orange County, according to Florida Vital Statistics. It also has a higher percentage of obesity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Heart of Apopka is aimed at significantly affecting the health of 10,000 Apopka citizens. A community health initiative in the East Orlando area, Cuidate focuses on educating Hispanic area residents on chronic diseases and healthy lifestyle changes. Free training, health information, community outreach and clinics are components of the program that is in collaboration among: Florida Hospital, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando, East Orlando Chamber of Commerce, Primary Care Access Network, University of Central Florida and the Orange County Health Department. Florida Hospital has launched the SuperFit Family Challenge eight-week program to encourage families to get healthy. Based on Florida Hospital’s Amazon.com bestseller, SuperSized Kids, the program teaches families how to avoid the No. 1 family health crisis facing them today— obesity. This step-by-step, medically sound weightcontrol program is designed for the whole family and is being used nationwide by corporations, schools, churches and other communities.
