Florida Hospital Milestones A CENTURY OF CARE 1908–2008 1964–1969 1990–1993 Florida Hospital opens its doors on the shores of Lake Estelle with 20 beds, lab, X-ray, surgery, maternity unit and … dirt streets. Florida Hospital Altamonte opens its doors in an area so underdeveloped that bears are seen walking in front of the hospital. The ﬁrst laminar air-ﬂow room in Florida is built, providing a germ-free atmosphere for joint replacement surgery. Patients enjoy staying the entire winter at Florida Hospital, with guest cottages, a boathouse and entertainment, including a 9-hole golf course, croquet, shufﬂeboard, tennis, suntan booths and even an alligator pit available. The ﬁrst cardiac pacemaker is implanted, marking the beginning of Florida Hospital’s excellence in cardiac care. Following that, the area’s ﬁrst openheart surgery and ﬁrst cardiac catheterization are performed. Florida Hospital Apopka joins the family. One of the ﬁrst CT scanners in the nation is installed. Florida Hospital Cancer Institute opens with a major contribution from the Walt Disney Family. Florida Hospital Celebration Health and the 365,000-squarefoot RDV Sportsplex in conjunction with the Orlando Magic open. Emergency air transport begins as the helipad is built along Lake Estelle. Florida Hospital is also selected by NASA as the backup landing facility in the event of emergencies at Cape Canaveral. Florida Hospital East Orlando, Kissimmee and Winter Park Memorial become part of the family.
