Happy 100 N Learn the keys to living to a healthy 100 earing her 103rd birthday, Lois Shoemaker is one of the 70,000 centenarians in the United States. She was born around the time the Ford Motor Company debuted its first Model T and Mama and Papa Gus started their Gustafson dairy farm in Central Florida. She was 2 when Florida Hospital opened its doors. In 1908, life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years. Diseases such as pneumonia, influenza and tuberculosis were the leading causes of death. “What a difference a century makes,” says Shoemaker in amazement. Today, because of the advancements in medicine and living a healthy lifestyle, she is a social butterfly, visiting with friends and family, and until recently line dancing. 100 Years ago Health care was very different in 1908, when diets were high in fat, smoking was prescribed to improve lung function, and potions containing opium and cocaine were used to cure common ailments. “Little was known about the necessity for sterilization of medical instruments or the need for pure drinking water,” says Des Cummings Jr., PhD, senior vice president at Florida Hospital. “In fact, sunlight was something to be avoided and bathing was considered hazardous.” A small group of Seventh-day Adventist Christians arrived in Central Florida in 1908 seeking the area’s fresh air, glorious sunshine and pure water.
