Best in Care - Centennial Issue - (Page 7) plenty of sleep, relaxation and good nutrition. This passionate group established Florida Hospital. “Our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ, and the principles of health that we were founded on 100 years ago are the same today,” Dr. Cummings says. “We believe in whole-person health—that is health of the mind, the body and the spirit. It is the basis of what we live by and what we encourage our patients to live by.” While there are centenarians like Lois Shoemaker who have lived to a healthy 100 and beyond, it is still the exception today. Florida Hospital wants to change that! Hospital officials feel that reaching a healthy 100 has to do with living a healthy lifestyle. Interestingly, a study published in National Geographic revealed, “Seventh-day Adventists rank among America’s longevity all-stars and produce a high rate of centenarians.” In fact, Adventist men live 11 years longer than other men. “Our secrets to health are captured in the eight principles of health derived from the seven days of creation. They are summarized in the acronym CREATION Health: Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal relationships, Outlook and Nutrition,” Dr. Cummings says. “We believe that by following these principles, a person can reverse the negative effects of lifestyle, prevent disease and ultimately achieve total health and wellness.” Shoemaker agrees. “Living healthy and having a positive approach about life are essential. At age 15, I signed a pledge that I would never smoke and never drink. I’m proud to say that I’ve never broken that pledge. I’ve been active throughout the years.” Florida Hospital is committed to changing lives and helping people live to a healthy 100. Its proven whole-person health philosophy and 100 years of delivering the highest level of medical care to millions are the foundation for moving forward with this bold health initiative. “We are embracing our past 100 years of extraordinary accomplishments and looking toward the future health of our community. We must reverse the startling health trends of childhood obesity, diabetes and heart disease that are happening right here in Central Florida,” Dr. Cummings says. As kids spend less time playing ball and more time in front of the television, their risk of developing heart disease as well as other diseases continues to grow. In fact, it’s a “supersized” condition that kids in the United States are facing. LIVING TO A HEALTHY 100 “This is the first generation in American history whose life expectancy may actually decrease. Medical problems that doctors once saw only in adults age 50 or older are now striking individuals in their 20s: heart disease, colorectal cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, joint problems and arthritis,” Dr. Cummings says. “We are 100 percent committed to reversing this trend and ensuring that the future leaders of Central Florida live a long and healthy life. We are shaping a ‘Children’s Hospital of the Future’ with our partner Walt Disney World, recruiting world-class pediatric specialists and launching new and innovative children’s health programs. We’ve also recruited former U.S. Surgeon General Antonia Novello, MD, to guide our children’s health and policy platform. We are tackling childhood obesity and ensuring the health of our kids.” Living healthy is one thing, but living at peak performance is another. Florida Hospital is developing programs to help people reach their peak performance in life. “Our physicians and clinicians are also developing new and innovative ways to prevent and detect illnesses and diseases decades in advance so that people can change their lifestyle habits and reverse or prevent problems,” Dr. Cummings says. Understanding and researching how medical and lifestyle factors contribute to longevity and health are crucial to transforming how people live. Florida Hospital will develop new partnerships with research centers, medical schools, and technology and pharmaceutical companies to unlock the keys to living longer. “We have partnered with some amazing forerunners in research like the renowned Burnham Institute to understand how, for example, diabetes affects the heart long-term. We’re also working with technology and communication companies to bring health and medicine into the home and directly to a personal digital assistant. We want people to understand how their lifestyle choices are affecting their health today and into the future,” Dr. Cummings says. LIVING AT PEAK PERFORMANCE Did You Know? UNLOCKING THE KEYS TO LONGEVITY THE HEALTHY GAME PLAN John Harvey Kellogg, MD, leader of the first Adventist Hospital where Florida Hospital’s founders originated, developed Kellogg’s Corn Flakes in the late 1800s for his patients as an alternative to the high-fat “biscuit-gravy-bacon-egg” breakfasts that were commonly eaten. He is also the inventor of the first generation of exercise equipment, the mechanical horse. Kellogg’s patient Charles W. Post was inspired by Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and created Post Toasties. He went on to develop GrapeNuts as an alternative to corn flakes. Today, Post and Kellogg’s remain the nation’s cereal leaders.
