For her 8th birthday, Jasmin Baker of Apopka got a special present: a life without debilitating disease. In September, the secondgrader received Central Florida’s first bone marrow transplant to cure sickle cell Paul Gordon, disease, a blood cell disorder MD, Pediatric that causes pain and damage Hematology to the organs. Oncology Now, Jasmin can have the normal childhood that hadn’t been possible. “I can do more things I couldn’t do before. I’m excited to play with my brother and my dog,” says Jasmin. “Jasmin has spent most of her life in the hospital,” says her mom, Mariah. “I couldn’t have imagined a better birthday present for my little girl than a life without the disease.” Paul Gordon, MD, medical director of the pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation program at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children, explains: “People with sickle cell disease often face health issues ranging from shorter life expectancies to hospitalizations for infection to intense pain.” Florida Hospital for Children and Florida Hospital are the only hospitals in Central Florida to o er bone marrow transplants. Bone marrow transplants can be used to treat more than 70 cancerous and non-cancerous diseases, including sickle cell disease. “We feel blessed to have found Dr. Gordon and his team,” remarks Mariah. “Jasmin’s life is forever changed because of her transplant. Now she can be the little girl that she was always meant to be.” YOUR TICKET TO AN EASIER MRI The next time you and your child are at the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children, you may feel as if you’re going to the movies instead of coming for a medical procedure. Newly enhanced and expanded imaging services include the Laura Varich, addition of Cinemavision, a stateMD, Diagnostic of-the-art 3-D video and sound Radiology system made especially for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests. MRIs use a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to take images of organs and structures inside the body. During the test, patients don goggles and headsets and watch movies or calming videos, which helps alleviate fear or claustrophobia during scans that take between 20 to 45 minutes. “For patients, especially children, who previously needed sedation to remain still that long, we believe this new technology will create a more soothing and relaxing environment,” says Laura Varich, MD, medical director of Imaging for the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children. 2 For questions or to RSVP to events, call (407) 303-BEST (2378).
