Diet as medicine Euclid Hospital helps patients fight inflammation with food By Samantha Pirc Last year was not a good one for Kenda Lentz. Daily pain had forced her to apply for disability at work and there were some mornings when she could barely make it out of bed. Coupled with an almost constant hunger that had caused her to gain 20 pounds, Lentz felt as if she had hit rock bottom. In January 2009, after several doctors in the Toledo area were unable to provide her with the help she needed, Lentz did some research and turned to Cleveland Clinic Pain Management Center at Euclid Hospital for answers and relief. “I felt I was too young to give up,” Lentz says. “I had tried everything and been to so many doctors that this was my last hope.” comfort Foods Five foods that are part of the anti-inflammatory diet: 1. Salmon, or any food with a high level of omega-3 2. Almonds, a handful a day 3. Berries (strawberries, blackberries and blueberries) 4. Whole grains, such as brown rice or sweet potatoes 5. Lean chicken A Lifestyle change Lentz worked with William Welches, DO, PhD, and Michaelene Glavic, RN, anti-inflammatory nurse specialist, to set up an integrated plan that began with an anti-inflammatory diet to lessen her pain. The diet, along with an exercise plan, is a lifestyle change, one that a nurse specialist, physician and other experts at the Pain Management Center specialize for a patient’s specific goals. “You can’t expect someone to turn bad eating habits around immediately,” says Glavic, who tells patients one way to stick to the diet is to change their view of food so they see it as fuel for the body instead of anything else. now pain-free thanks to cleveland clinic pain Management center at euclid hospital, Kenda Lentz enjoys walking her dogs. things I hadn’t done in almost a year like walking my dogs and exercising,” Lentz says. She has shed the weight she gained and no longer has cravings for sugary foods, which nowadays don’t even taste the same to her. In conjunction with manipulation of the joints and a steroid injection, Lentz is in the middle of completing physical therapy and is happily returning to her normal life. “This really is a lifestyle change for me that I am fully committed to.” committing to the cure Within days of starting her diet, Lentz began to feel an increase in energy, and within two months, almost all her inflammation and pain were gone. “I felt like a different person.
