a time who have participated in the program to celebrate life together, and our former patients are always very pleased to attend,” says O’Maille. “We first opened our doors in 1998 and continually look for ways to improve and serve our patients,” says Joyce Vazquez, MS, PT, clinical manager. “Our patients are like family and we are excited about big improvements going forward in 2012.” Enjoying the Journey During the program, McClain’s background in martial arts was discovered. Soon, he was attending the after-hours martial arts training offered to staff by Patrick Schmitt, DO, a physician at the Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital at Euclid Hospital. Patients enjoy therapeutic fun. As part of the Neuro Day program, group physical therapy and exercise activities like balloon badminton help patients reach their goals toward independence. “The Neuro Day staff and everyone at Euclid Hospital have demonstrated that they sincerely care about me and my outcome. They have helped me grow stronger and have encouraged me with every step. The opportunity to practice martial arts is just one example of their genuine attitude toward their patients,” says McClain. An associate pastor at his church, McClain was very pleased to return to the pulpit recently. His talk was on faith. “After my stroke, I prayed God would give me more faith. I laughed out loud when the first therapist who worked with me was named Faith. I am blessed that I could share the hope that I have with a few patients during my time at Euclid Hospital.” As McClain officially finishes the Neuro Day program, he is eager to return to biking and his active lifestyle. “I have gained so much from this journey—beyond just getting my mobility back,” says McClain. “But it is time to move on.” Willie McAllister, Cleveland Clinic photography Mark McClain (left) laughs with a fellow patient during a Neuro Day trivia quiz activity.
