It’s time to thrive Manage your diabetes right in 2012 with these six steps It’s a new year, which makes it a great time for people who have diabetes to resolve to take a few simple steps to improve their health. Here are six easy-to-keep resolutions from the diabetes experts at South Pointe Hospital that can make a difference for you in 2012: Make a plan. Don’t just let your meals happen. The more planning you put into them, the more likely your meals are to include whole grains, fruits, vegetables and other foods that are high in fiber— all elements that your body really needs. Planning also makes it less likely that you will skip meals. By eating every four to six hours, you greatly reduce your risk of making bad choices just because you are so hungry. Be bright. The more colors that appear on your plate, especially in salads, the more nutrient-rich your meal is likely to be. Aim for bright choices like tomatoes, carrots, blueberries, broccoli and spinach. Stay home. When you prepare your meals yourself, you know what is in them. Eating in restaurants is fun and convenient, but since you do not always know everything that goes into a prepared dish, your best bet is to stick to home cooking more often than not. (call) SIGN UP FOR A DIABETES CLASS OR SUPPORT GROUP Check southpointehospital.org for upcoming dates and times, or call 216.491.7385. Get moving! Strive to exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week. Fortunately, there’s no one right way to exercise. Determine what is most enjoyable and effective for you, whether it’s being outdoors, going to the gym or partnering with a buddy. Keep up. Don’t miss follow-up appointments with your primary care physician. Regular testing of your blood glucose numbers and your A1C helps you keep on top of any developing problems. Meet up. Sign up for a diabetes education class or support group. South Pointe Hospital offers a four-session diabetes management course as well as annual refresher classes. Support groups keep you up to date and provide answers to your questions. At South Pointe Hospital, you also can meet with dietitians and nurses who are Certified Diabetes Educators.
