Health Wonders - Fall 2008 - (Page 2) Exciting Things to Come in 2009 Community residents driving near the intersection of Interstate 90 and State Route 44 in Lake County cannot help but notice the construction activity next to the sign bearing the distinctive red University Hospitals logo and words Concord Health Center. The artistic rendering on this page can only hint at the scope and quality of technologically advanced services to be available at the University Hospitals Concord Health Center when it opens in 2009. In addition to primary and specialty physician offices, the center will include the latest in diagnostic testing services, outpatient surgery center and an urgent care center. The demand for contemporary facilities in our region offering ambulatory healthcare services has never been greater. As the population continues to age, our friends and neighbors increasingly seek basic healthcare services to maintain healthy lifestyles or to seek specialized care for more advanced health issues close to home. After all, healthcare is a local phenomenon. University Hospitals serves patients at more than 150 locations throughout Northeast Ohio to provide a wide range of services to individuals of all ages. And we continue to invest in more of these facilities, such as the soon-to-be-built Concord Health Center, to meet the increasing demand. At University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, for example, we have completed a $4.5 million surgery 2 Fall 2008 center expansion to accommodate a larger numbers of procedures performed on an outpatient basis. Medical oncology therapy is completed on a same-day basis for patients at the University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center at Geauga Medical Center, as are specialized rehabilitation therapy procedures in our new and specialized Hand and Upper Extremity and Foot and Ankle Centers. And for those patients needing to visit one or more specialty physicians in a single convenient location, the Specialty Clinic at Geauga Medical Center offers a onestop experience, complete with sophisticated on-site diagnostic imaging and laboratory services. Hospital inpatient facilities will always be needed, of course, but the evidence is clear that more and more of today’s and tomorrow’s healthcare services—with the aid of new technology—will be provided to patients who can arrive from and return to their homes in the same day. And that is a healthy proposition for us all. May you and your family enjoy the beautiful autumn splendor in Northeast Ohio. Sincerely, Richard J.
