Health Wonders - Summer 2008 - (Page 6) Witnessing a Wonder Linda Pignatiello, an ovarian cancer survivor now fighting her sixth recurrence in 13 years, was introduced as the winner of the University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center “Wonderful Getaway Giveaway” at the second annual Women’s Health Expo on Feb. 2 in Aurora. The contest encouraged individuals to share a life-changing, soul-saving or heart-warming “wonder” they experienced or witnessed at Geauga Medical Center, and Pignatiello’s entry was selected by a panel of independent judges. Her prize included a weekend stay in Niagara Falls. “It hasn’t been an easy path in my journey of life,” Pignatiello says. “I have endured many surgeries, many chemo treatments and radiation, while daily battling the side effects of the treatment plan. It definitely has been heart-warming, soulsaving, and life-altering and I’m thankful for hospitals like UH Geauga Medical Center and my physician daily.” Best of all, according to Pignatiello, she is able to enjoy her three grandchildren, who were all born at Geauga Medical Center. Neurological Know-How Headache, stroke, pain and other conditions related to the nervous system can sometimes evade precise diagnosis and treatment, but University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center has brought a new level of sophistication to deal with these problems and more. Under the medical direction of Rose Dotson, M.D., a fellowshiptrained expert in neuromuscular disease, the Neurological Institute at Geauga Medical Center also provides expert care for Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and neuromuscular diseases such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), autonomic dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy. “We have plenty of expertise here at Geauga, and we are comfortable with complex cases,” Dr. Dotson says. “If patients need additional subspecialized care, we work closely with colleagues at the University Hospitals Neurological Institute at Case Medical Center.” The University Hospitals Neurological Institute, comprising 14 centers of expertise, is Northeast Ohio’s first designated institute for the comprehensive care of patients with disorders affecting the brain, spine and nervous system. Joining “Wonderful Getaway Giveaway” winner Linda Pignatiello (center) are OB/ GYN Natalina Andreani, M.D., left, and Nancy Alden from Soft Rock 102.1 WDOK.
