Make a Plan What are you doing about preparing for an emergency? Y ou prepare for everything: stains on work clothes. Skinned knees at the park. You even have the pizza place on speed dial for those nights when cooking is out of the question. But do you have a family emergency plan? Thinking About It There were 99 declared disasters in the U.S. in 2011 and 47 in 2012, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. That includes severe storms, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, mudslides and earthquakes. Worried About It Put together an emergency kit to last you at least three days. It should contain water, food, a can opener, a radio, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, moist towelettes, local maps, and a cellphone and charger. Ignoring It Only 38 percent of Americans had a family emergency plan in place in 2010. Make a plan, write it down and share it with everyone in the house. Acting on It Educate yourself on other ways to be prepared for disaster. Visit ready.gov to download emergency kit lists and instructions for creating a family communication plan. Download the MMH health and safety brochure, which includes instructions on how to put together your own safety kit as well as other resources and important Meeker County information you should know during a disaster.
