Health Beat HEALTH BEAT McCoy Foundation Makes Gift to New NICU The Central Texas Medical Center Foundation’s 16th annual Stars of Texas Gala raised a record $256,000, thanks in large part to a generous donation of $100,000 by the Miriam and Emmett McCoy Foundation. Proceeds from the Gala, held this past fall, will support the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), currently under construction within the expansion project on the hospital’s Wonder World Drive campus. “We just feel so fortunate to have a hospital in our community,” Miriam McCoy said upon making the gift. A record 420 people attended the Oct. 12 event at Hilton Austin for a night of fine food, spirited live and silent auction bidding, and music by Austin’s own Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel. The Gala also honored the CTMC Foundation founders who, in 1983, raised nearly $1 million to help construct the core of the hospital’s current facility. Coincidentally, the McCoys were the first to make a donation to the e ort 25 years ago. “The founders have been such an essential part of the progress of our hospital,” says Gary Jepson, CTMC President and CEO. “They have inspired and enabled the physical and spiritual care that we have provided to our community for the past 25 years.” The CTMC Foundation founders are: Stanley Ault, DDS; Richard Burdick; Ann Cauthorn; Eleanor Crook; Frank Gordon; Bruce Harper; H.C. Kyle III; Emmett McCoy; and Van Rea, M.D. To learn more about the CTMC Foundation or the services of Central Texas Medical Center supported by the Foundation’s e orts, please call (512) 753-3687 or go to ctmc.org. Get a Sneak Peek CTMC’s expansion project is well under way. The first phase, including the new Childbirth Center and specialty cardiacmonitored unit, is slated to open in fall 2009. Check out the project’s progress at ctmc.org. Miriam and Emmett McCoy recently presented a $100,000 check to CTMC Foundation Executive Director, Clay DeStefano, in support of the hospital’s new NICU. A Refreshed You Sleep disorders are a serious health matter, but today effective treatments exist for these medical conditions. The first step is identifying the problem. Take this assessment to see if you might be suffering from one of the most common: sleep apnea, which, according to the National Institutes of Health, affects more than 12 million adults. Do you: • Snore? • Have morning headaches? • Have memory problems or an inability to concentrate? • Often wake up feeling irritated or depressed? If you have any of these symptoms, be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor for an evaluation.
