Classic Cars Mirror Collector’s Life Dick Burdick has a thing for cars. You could even say his cars reflect his life DiCk BurDiCk, one of CTMC’s founDaTion founders and the retired former owner of Thermon Manufacturing, soon will tell his personal “rags to riches” story in the form of classic cars on display in a museum he is building in san Marcos. The 43,000-square-foot Classic Car Museum will house more than 60 of the Burdick family’s classic vehicle collection. The cars on display will begin with the year 1929, the start of the Great Depression and, coincidentally, Burdick’s birth year. Visitors to the museum will also see famous automobiles of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and beyond, including studebakers, Packards, Pierce-arrows and other fully restored vehicles. “it has been a long-term dream of mine to bring to san Marcos a classic car museum,” says Burdick. “i am happy to say that we are well on our way to making this dream a reality.” Throughout his life, pursuing his dreams and passions has proved to be the key to Burdick’s success. Though he now owns hundreds of cars and a successful manufacturing company, Burdick remembers a time when $20 was a lot of money. “it started with an idea back in the 1950s,” Burdick says about Thermon, the company he built a half-century ago. While working at DuPont, Burdick came up with the idea for a heat-conducting compound. “i borrowed $20 from my grocer and a buddy of mine who was ‘rich’—he had $20 of his own—and the next thing you know, we were in business.” Thermon grew to become an international success. “i’ve been doing whatever i want ever since,” says Burdick, who will celebrate his 80th birthday this year. His love for classic cars goes beyond collecting—he is also a five-time winner of the Great race, a cross-country classic car race. Giving back is also what keeps Burdick’s life on track. as one of the founders of the CTMC foundation, he helped conduct a successful capital campaign in 1983 that raised nearly $1 million to help build a new hospital in san Marcos. That hospital now serves as the core of Central Texas Medical Center. But Burdick wanted to give more back to san Marcos. That’s why he decided to locate the new museum here. He felt san Marcos’ growing tourism industry needed more destination attractions and expects the Classic Car Museum will attract about 100,000 visitors a year. “it’s a great location, near the outlet mall,” he says. “i’m one of those guys who gets stuck at the outlet mall looking for something to do,” and he hopes the new museum will give others another place to go while in town. CTMC applauds Burdick’s commitment to san Marcos, from his long-standing interest in healthcare to his personal investment in our economy. Like the chrome of the automobiles he cares for, his heart shines a light for all to enjoy.
