BRIEFS 100th Da Vinci Milestone Marked Next level of technology now available When Teri Irwin, MD, performed the first da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical procedure at Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) on May 22, 2012, the hospital set a goal to complete 100 operations within 12 months. Just six months later, on Nov. 20, 2012, Irwin performed the 100th procedure. The first and 100th surgeries were both Ob-Gyn procedures, but CTMC’s da Vinci surgery program has expanded to include urologic and general operations as well. In mid-December, the hospital advanced its da Vinci program by performing its first single-site robotic procedure, using only one small incision to complete surgery as opposed to the four typically used. If you or a loved one is facing surgery, find out whether you qualify for a da Vinci procedure. Any lump should be evaluated. Other reasons to call your doctor include dimpled breast skin, nipple discharge, an inverted nipple or a bruise on the breast that cannot be explained. 1 Improvements to Local Healthcare The Hays County Commissioners Court is working with CTMC to leverage federal dollars for covering costs of treating Hays County citizens currently using services at the Hays County Personal Health Department (PHD). In January, as part of this local realignment of healthcare, CTMC began operating many of the clinical services currently available to clients at the county’s Personal Health Department through the hospital’s Live Oak Health Partners primary care providers. The hospital is also working to expand and improve healthcare resources that are available to citizens of Hays County. “We have been blessed to work with our county officials on this vital project,” says CTMC President and CEO Sam Huenergardt, “and over time we will be able to offer more healthcare options to our citizens because of this program.” In addition to federal tax dollars being brought back to Hays County, qualified patients who need care beyond what the county can provide will have access to specialists at CTMC who can manage and treat chronic diseases. Bringing quality preventive care to those who may not be able to visit doctors regularly is expected to reduce emergency room visits and provide a better continuum of care for those in need. If you feel something is wrong, get it checked out. Chances are, it’s nothing. But at least you’ll have peace of mind. And that’s priceless.
