Life & limb Ramandeep Sidhu, MD Vascular Surgery Vascular surgery at Fairview saves mom-to-be Danielle Roach was halfway into her ﬁrst pregnancy when one morning she noticed she couldn’t lift her leg into her clothing. The oddity soon turned into a nightmare: The 30-year-old West Park woman was experiencing the formation of a huge blood clot that would require a precise endovascular surgical procedure to save the use of her leg and potentially her life and fetus. Called a deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, the clot develops in a vein deep in the body and can travel through the bloodstream, where it can lodge in the lungs as a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Pregnancy is a risk factor for DVT, as are age, obesity, birth control pills, a history of clotting disorders, and slow blood ﬂow from lack of movement. Until then, Roach’s pregnancy—with a boy whom she plans to name Max—had been complication-free. But her condition threw a “monkey wrench” into her plans. During a weeklong stay at Fairview Hospital, medical staff administered powerful blood thinners to Roach, who was a radiology student at Cleveland Clinic until she became pregnant. “I was very, very fearful,” she says. “Do you take care of yourself ﬁrst, or do you take care of your pregnancy?” Danielle Roach and Randall Krzysten are expecting a baby boy this summer.
