Desert Dining Like the parking lot Indian fry bread at San Xavier del Bac, there are some things that are required eating every time you visit. 1 The first is the tres leches cake at St. Mary’s (1030 W. St. Mary’s Road). In this bright orange dive on the side of the road, you’ll find massive polystyrene cartons (whether you eat in or out) of red and green chiles, birria and tacos. Enjoy them all with the massive hand-stretched tortilla. But do not neglect that cake. Straight from the refrigerator, it’s cold, soaked in milk and not tooth-achingly sweet. Perfect. Sit at the counter for a beer and a spicy, lemony Seven Seafood Stew or the Shrimp Endiablo—basically a spicy shrimp adobo—at the kitschy, marinemural-covered Mariscos Chihuahua (1009 N. Grande Ave.). 1 2 2 3 If you decide to go upscale, try Chef Davila’s elevated take on Mexican traditions such as mole and pork pibil at Café Poca Cosa (110 E. Pennington St.). 4 If you love barbecue, visit this unlikely source: the golf club at JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa (3645 W. Starr Pass Blvd.). The chefs at the new Catalina Barbeque Co. and Sports Bar go to barbecue competitions all over the country to learn and compete. They’re not joking around. Pulled pork shoulder (try it with the North Carolina–inspired vinegar) is worthy of any pig-hut. And the brisket burnt ends is just as it sounds: crisp but meaty. It will be the sides that get you, though: aged cheddar mac ’n’ cheese, bourbon creamed corn, sweet hot pickles. A delightful surprise. 3 4 J WM MAGAZINE 61 j w m a r r i o t t. c o m http://www.JWMARRIOTT.COM
