These options will help you arrive looking stylish. ike sharing was once a quaint idea, the domain of small towns and seaside villages, where tourists and locals used colorful bikes to get around town, and no one worried about thieves. Then in 2007, Paris debuted its Vélib system—a slick, largescale public bicycle-sharing system, complete with over 20,000 groovy gray cycles and more than 1,200 stations conveniently located in high-traffic areas and near public transit hubs. Users could sign up with a credit or debit card to buy one-day (US$2.25), one-week (US$10.50) or annual (US$38) subscriptions, which cover unlimited half-hour trips (longer trips incur an additional charge). Although Copenhagen began offering its white citybikes in 1995, it was the Paris program that inspired the rest of the world with its approach to bike sharing—suddenly it wasn’t just a nice idea, but a viable part of the larger public transit system. Now, there are more than 300 bike-sharing programs around the world, with Hangzhou, China boasting the largest, with 50,000 bikes. New York City is currently preparing both the streets and its residents for a new bike-sharing program. Set to debut in summer 2012, the N.Y.C. program will start with 10,000 bikes and eventually rival the size of Hangzhou’s program and provide easy links between neighborhoods and subway lines. Elsewhere in the United States, bike-sharing programs are thriving in Madison, Wisc., Denver, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., with programs planned for San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago. BIKE HAPPY Today Europe boasts a bike-sharing program in nearly every major city. Mexico City launched its Ecobici program in 2010, and a 10-city bike-sharing pilot was announced in India in early 2012. The India program promises to address an issue that has been plaguing public transit users for years. “People coming out of railway stations find these bikes to be an easy and faster transport option,” explains Raj Janagam, founder of Cycle Chalao!, which is working with India’s transport ministry on the pilots.
