My Passion Greg norman a man in full follows a path forged by enthusiasm ative australian Greg Norman first made a name for himself on the PGa tour in the early 1980s, when his nationality, his sun-bleached hair and his selfavowed identity as “an aggressive golfer with a fairly aggressive lifestyle” earned him the nickname the Great white Shark. in the years since he has not only vaulted himself into the ranks of the world’s top golfers but has also parlayed his “Shark” identity into one of the great international lifestyle brands. Norman’s Great white Shark Enterprises encompasses products ranging from sports apparel to premium wine and beef and endeavors from golf course design to real estate development. at the center of it all is Norman, who has brought to his business ventures the same élan and energy that defined his golf game. He also brings a remarkable degree of hands-on passion to his pursuits. His entry into course design was emblematic of this approach—when asked to be a consultant on two ted robinsondesigned courses in the 1980s, Norman knew he was being paid just for use of his name. But “because my name was going out there,” he says, “i wanted to make sure that my fingerprints were on those golf courses in some way, shape or form—and that’s when i fell in love with it.” in a more boring world where he would have to choose just one career, Norman says that course design would be it. Fortunately, though, he’s free to follow his enthusiasms wherever they take him. in 1999, his growing love of wine—and a desire to show off the quality wines of his native australia—led him to launch Greg Norman Estates. in so doing, he started what’s become a trend among top golfers. But Norman was first, working closely with australian winemakers from the start to tailor wines to the american palate. what drives Norman, he says, is brand recognition. He embraces the challenge of embodying his products and his work, of “every day waking up being the living, breathing brand.” it’s a life for which Norman seems uniquely suited, whether at work or play. “Everybody says to me—no matter whether they go away on a holiday with me, or a diving trip or my ranch in colorado—they say, ‘Greg you never rest, you never stop,’” he admits. “a shark’s in perpetual motion … at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about: How do you keep it going forward?” —Eric wyBENGa N “You keep going,” the Shark says, “in perpetual motion.” J WM MAGAZINE 92 j w m a r r i o t t. c o m © Michael O’BryOn http://www.JWMARRIOTT.COM
