ESSENTIALS Unexpected Las Vegas While it’s easy to stick to the Las Vegas Strip when you visit, there’s another side to the city that never sleeps. Natural Beauties Fresh snow on the Spring Mountains at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, above, and elegant creations from Jeff White Custom Jewelry, below. Golf and Relaxation Nine golf courses surround the JW MARRIOTT LAS VEGAS RESORT & SPA, whose on-site golf concierge from TPC Las Vegas helps guests with reservations and recommendations. This area is the peaceful antithesis of the Strip, and you’ll be amazed how relaxing Las Vegas can be when you ensconce yourself at the hotel’s Spa Aquae & Salon for the Spa Aquae Ritual, beginning in the Ritual Room and moving through six chambers of the outdoor hydrotherapy circuit pool. Need serious relaxation? Try the 80-minute Shirodhara Ritual, based on ancient Ayurveda, which includes a full-body massage. Make a day of it: Spa-goers get free yoga classes, and the 11,000-squarefoot “waterfall pool” ranks as one of Condé Nast Traveler’s 7 Best Waterfall Pools of the World. J WM MAGAZINE 32 Dine Around Homey new joint Honey Salt (1031 S. Rampart Blvd.) is backed by serious star power: the brainchild of restaurant consultant Elizabeth Blau and her husband, Chef Kim Canteenwalla, who has run major kitchens from Toronto, Cambodia, Bali, Dubai and Bangkok to Las Vegas. Diners eat homey farm-fresh (locally sourced) dishes with a twist at perfectly weathered barn wood tables. Look for a silken burrata with blood orange, basil and balsamic (order it “Kim’s style” with shaved bittersweet chocolate). No one can argue the pizza pedigree of Dom DeMarco’s (9785 W. Charleston Blvd.); it’s the Vegas outpost of decades-old Brooklyn cult favorite Di Fara. Go for the Di Fara Special, a crispcrusted square pie topped with hand-crushed San Marzano tomatoes, grana padano cheese and specially sourced olive oil. It Takes a Village Across the street from the JW resort is Tivoli Village (440 S. Rampart Blvd.), a 700,000-square-foot shopping and dining complex with strolling space and al fresco tables. Angelo Sosa of Top Chef fame opened Poppy Den, an avant-garde Asian gastropub with a great sharing menu and a philanthropic attitude: 20 percent of Mondays’ proceeds goes to local charities. Bradley Ogden, sorely missed since he left Caesars Palace, has opened Ogden’s Hops & Harvest with his signature farm-totable style. Also try Echo & Rig Steakhouse & Butcher Shop, which opened in August, and Pizza Lounge. Tivoli’s food scene J W M A R R I O T T. C O M ROLF HICKER/GETTY IMAGES, COURTESY OF JEFF WHITE CUSTOM JEWELRY L as Vegas locals love to joke that there’s no need to pack their bags and travel to visit friends, since inevitably you will come to us. With just under 40 million visitors last year, and a mini-boom of restaurant openings and new attractions, it’s probably true. Beyond the Las Vegas Strip, there is another Las Vegas. One of the best places to get a dose of some new—and perennial— attractions is 12 miles west of the Strip, in the neighborhood of Summerlin, where celebrity chefs are flexing their creative muscles and where designers with whimsy to spare are flocking. For nature lovers, the Las Vegas Springs Preserve and Red Rock are a stone’s throw away. Hip Downtown is a straight shot east. http://www.JWMARRIOTT.COM
