JW MARRIOTT SAN ANTONIO S ome come to the majestic JW MARRIOTT SAN ANTONIO HILL COUNTRY—perched on a bluﬀ northeast of downtown, about an hour’s drive from the Circuit of the Americas—for its vast meeting space and business facilities. Others come with families for the waterslides and lazy-river pool, or to dine at the 18 Oaks steakhouse on the golf course, where Chef Ryan Littman sources local beef, bison and venison as part of a property-wide commitment to the freshest, most sustainable products. However, I’d been immersing myself in the glorious commotion of Grand Prix racing. I needed to get the roar of the cars—and the 100,000 enthusiasts who shared the experience with me—out of my head. So I went for the red ribbons. Part of a traditional South Texas serenity ritual, those ribbons are oﬀered to guests who book treatments at the 26,000-square-foot spa, the largest in Texas. For every worry on your mind, you’re supposed to tie a knot in the ribbon. You then add it to the pile at the foot of a spiral staircase, letting it ﬂutter away from your hand— and carry the stress away with it. I tossed my ribbon on the pile, then spent a serene hour letting a masseuse work my neck and shoulders. I drove back to Austin the next day refreshed and renewed, leaving both the knots I’d made in the ribbon and the knots I’d had in my neck far behind. —B.S. Looking for a front-row seat?
