essentials the art of travel When Ranjana Steinruecke travels, she seeks out inspiration and always packs her flip-flops. G allerist ranjana Steinruecke showcases mid-career and emerging indian artists at her pint-sized gallery, mirchandani + Steinruecke, in mumbai’s colaba district. She previously ran a contemporary indian art gallery in Berlin for seven years before returning to her native india. Being part of the art fraternity means she’s on the road several times a year, visiting artists and galleries and attending biennales from moscow to madrid to chennai. JWM | How does travel inspire you? RS | Being away from my regular routine brings about a sense of lightness and euphoria that can often lead to inspiration. But for me, the real inspiration comes from meeting with and talking to artists, friends and colleagues in the art community during business trips to New Delhi, chicago, copenhagen or wherever it might be. You learn so much and realize anew how much is happening out there. i also travel with my family a few times a year, and we encourage our boys to research the history of each new destination before we travel there. it’s kind of funny, we end up getting some wonderful perspective from them this way without having to read up on [the place] ourselves. JWM | Do you have any specific travel rituals? RS | i make sure i get a manicure and pedicure before i travel. it always makes me feel more put-together. and after a trip, i will sleep for half a day. it’s my ‘transition’ ritual to process what i’ve experienced on the trip and readjust.   JWM | What do you always pack? Do you have a particular method of packing? RS | i always pack either too much or too little. But no matter what, i do always pack my Havaianas flip-flops. they make a hotel room feel like home. JWM | What’s your favorite city in the world for art? RanJana SteinRuecke | at the moment, mumbai is my favorite city for art. an art scene is exciting when it isn’t quite there yet but has big potential and is in the making. we have a newly established mumbai art District, and there’s a wealth of talent here too. Plus, we are well situated in asia, which is a hot region for contemporary art right now, with leading art fairs and biennales and the inter-regional dialogue making it all the more dynamic. there’s also a marked increase in institutional interest for the work of our artists, and we are currently loaning works by c.K. rajan, aji V.N. and manish Nai to exhibitions around the world. ©SebaStian CorteS JWM | Do you allow yourself certain indulgences when you travel? RS | absolutely. i take time out even on business trips to try a good restaurant, browse through unique shops, have a leisurely coffee somewhere or try out the gym at the hotel. these are some of the simple joys that i may not take the time for in mumbai, where i could be doing a hundred other things at the gallery or with the kids or at home. — Tanvi Chheda J WM MAGAZINE 38 j w m a r r i o t t. c o m http://www.JWMARRIOTT.COM
