ESSENTIALS
Quintessential Atlanta
Long known as a destination for conventions, Atlanta is emerging as a leisure
capital, combining Southern hospitality, world-class food and plenty of
cosmopolitan offerings. For those willing to tackle Atlanta’s infamous sprawl,
there’s a world of fine dining and great fun to discover.
For Atlanta’s answer to Madison
Avenue, head to Buckhead.
Taste Makers
Visit the World of Coca-Cola
(top) to learn more about the
secret formula, take a tour and
enjoy refreshing beverages.
Follow it up with a trip to
Miller Brothers for a made-tomeasure suit (lower left).
There, at the intersections of
Lenox, Peachtree and Piedmont
Roads, you’ll find the highest concentration of upscale boutiques in
the United States—and the
JW Marriott Atlanta Buckhead.
The hotel is conveniently connected to the Lenox Square Mall,
affording its guests the perfect opportunity to relax after a day there
or at any of the other 1,400 retail
units in the area.
Buckhead is also home to the
city’s most elegant street, West Paces Ferry Road, where you can ogle
the 24,000-square-foot Governor’s
Mansion. Atlantans like big. But they

Trendy in the Center
Atlanta’s “Intown” neighborhoods—Virginia Highlands, Inman
Park and Candler Park—have revitalized many older buildings and
now boast joggers, baby strollers
and loving renovations of Victorian
and Craftsman homes. Trendiest is
Virginia Highlands, at the corner
of North Highland and Virginia
Avenues, the city’s most walkable
neighborhood. Peruse the shops on
Highland: Gado Gado for Indonesian
art, Bill Hallman Original for casual
clothing and Judith Bright for original jewelry. Try the sushi at Harry
& Sons (820 North Highland Ave.;
404-873-2009); for haute Southern
cuisine, Rosebud (1397 North Highland Ave.; 404-347-9747) is terrific for
weekend brunch. At night, observe

traits that are especially surprising in
a city that’s so spread out.
For a refined men’s shopping
experience—and the city’s best
made-to-measure suits—head to
Miller Brothers (3207 Paces Ferry
Place 404-233-8000). Then continue on to Anis Cafe & Bistro (2974
Grandview Ave.; 404-233-9889) to
be transported to southern France,
while savoring moules marinières
and a plat de charcuterie. If American food is what you desire, try
Hal’s (30 Old Ivy Rd.; 404-261-0025),
which dishes up thick cuts of beef
in an old-time atmosphere of cigar
smoke, stiff drinks and sports celebrities. To round off your visit, see
the city-owned Bobby Jones Golf
Course (384 Woodward Way; 404355-1009), named for Atlanta’s most
famous golfer. Prefer a nightclub?
