To Market, To Market although hiking is Korea’s official pasttime, some may argue that it is in fact shopping. namdaemun and Dongdaemun, which originally served as the city’s southern and eastern gates, are now two of the city’s famous and bustling markets, where literally, all manner of product can be found. For a more upscale experience, head south to the gangnam area. Here, the main thoroughfare is full of shopping and is also home to the mammoth CoeX mall, which contains the stores a westerner might expect as well as designer names like Louis Vuitton. The mall also has its own aquarium, casino and kimchi museum. garosu-gil, in nearby sinsa, is a quiet little street lined with adorable boutiques, cafes and galleries. It’s a short walk from there to apgujeong, known as the Beverly Hills of seoul, complete with its own rodeo Drive (pronounced the cowboy way) where you can shop for Prada, gucci or Jimmy Choo. after a long day of shopping and exploring the gangnam area, head to the JW Marriott Seoul (19-3 Banpo-dong seocho-gu; 02-6282-6262) and treat yourself to its indulgent spa or a cocktail in the Bar rouge. Dinner and Dancing while seoul offers a complete range of culinary options, Korean barbeque is a must. The side streets of gangnam boast countless inexpensive restaurants where the meat is grilled in front of you and should be washed down with soju, the classic Korean rice wine. gom-Cine (942-20 Daechi-dong, gangnamgu; 02-567-4475), known for its charcoal-grilled beef belly, is easy to find, right outside of exit 2 at gangnam station. If beef isn’t your thing, drop into any of the city’s numerable chicken and hof restaurants for a satisfying meal of fried chicken and beer, Korean style. Two-Two Chicken is a ubiquitous chain whose chicken has a distinctly delicious breading that goes well with a cold Cass beer. after dinner, the young in age or at heart can head to Hongdae, the university district, for clubs and dancing. Club nB (402 seogyo-dong Mapo-gu; 02-333-2769), is popular with Koreans and foreigners and is known for its authentic hip-hop beats. escape from the crowds by popping into a noraebang with a few friends to sing karaoke in your own private room. even better, just walk around and people watch. The streets of seoul are incredibly safe and its people fully embrace the idea of unwinding after dark. while it’s often said of new York City, seoul truly is a city that never sleeps. —mina Gavell Eat, drink and be merry.
