THE SCENE. From left: The Cartier lunch in 2013; A visitor, left, expresses interest in a
piece of art; visitors at the 2013 Art Dubai enjoying a show.
For the first time, this contemporary art fair
will devote a section to 20th-century modern
art, showcasing masters from South Asia and
the Middle East, with top galleries vying to
get their artists seen.
Each year, Art Dubai tailors a curated
show to a different theme or geography, a
program known as Marker. This year's Marker
is led by a duo known as Slavs & Tatars, a
self-described "faction of polemics and intimacies devoted to an area east of the former
Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of
China known as Eurasia." The 2014 focus is
Central Asia and the Caucasus. The curators,
who explored the region in search of the most
dynamic galleries, art spaces and artists, will
reveal their eye-opening results at Art Dubai.
Don't Miss These
Artists Projects. Commissioned by Art Dubai's
directors, these witty, interactive works by
up-and-coming regional artists always draw a
crowd. "It's a fantastic journey to discover these
works dotted around the fair," Carver says.
Global Art Forum. "Conference" hardly
does justice to this multiday series of panel
discussions, talks, musical performances
and film screenings in which the organizers
deliberately shake things up by introducing
thought-provoking polemics.
Abraaj Capital Art Prize unveiling.
Six months prior to the fair, $1 million is
awarded to a group of five MENASA artists
and a curator, who collaborate on a special
exhibit. Don't miss this year's unveiling by a
winning group that includes Egyptian born
Basim Magdy; Anup Mathew Thomas of
Bengaluru, India; and Kamrooz Aram, an
Iranian living in Toronto.

Beyond the Gates: Three Hot Tickets
March is Dubai's cultural high season, and
during Art Week the city comes alive with
exhibits, performances and programs.
1 Design Days Dubai (located Downtown).
The only fair in Asia dedicated to limitededition design and furniture, this five-day event
(March 17 to 21) is truly international, with
exhibitors from London, New York, Mexico
City, Melbourne, Seoul and plenty of representatives from the Middle East. Visit the exhibit
by Beirut's Carwan Gallery, led by architects
Pascale Wakim and Nicolas BellavanceLecompte, which got its start in 2010 as the
first pop-up gallery in the Middle East.
2 Gallery Nights (Al Quoz and the Dubai
International Financial Centre). In anticipation of Art Week, local galleries coordinate
their top openings to coincide with the
fair. Don't miss Alserkal Avenue, a cluster of
former industrial-warehouses-cum-galleries

3 Sikka (Al Fahidi historical neighborhood).
Sponsored by the Dubai Culture and Arts
Authority, Sikka is a brand-new art fair
showcasing the work of Emirati artists.
Named for the narrow alleyways between
the historic houses of Dubai, Sikka is meant
as a metaphor applied to young artists seeking their creative and professional paths
through the fair. [
