Be a Hero Save lives by supporting the campaign for better cancer care close to home A A cancer diagnosis can make you feel as if your life is falling apart—Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center can help bring those pieces back together. Robin King and Diane McKoen, both of Malin and both “heroes,” have taken that philosophy and made it into a visual image for patients receiving treatment. King and McKoen, co-owners of Tater Patch Quilts in Merrill, Ore., with the combined efforts of fellow quilters, have provided the facility with a colorful and warm display of handmade quilts. These donated quilts scattered throughout the Cancer Treatment Center show the beauty that can be wrought by bringing those pieces together to craft a stronger and even more beautiful whole. They bring brightness and a homey feeling to the center, and comfort to those undergoing treatments for cancer. Sewn for Hope and Comfort King and McKoen say they feel fortunate to have Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center in the community. Both have firsthand experience with loved ones who have had cancer, and they know the value and comfort of receiving treatment in their own hometown. Through their business—more than a quilting-supply store, it also is a hub of activity for area quilters—they interact with many people whose lives have been touched by cancer either directly or through family and friends. These people echo their feelings. 6 WINTER 2013 King and McKoen also raised more than $2,000 for Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center by holding an auction featuring donated handmade quilts. The buyers knew that their purchases would help ensure that the Cancer Treatment Center would be there to help the people of our community heal and grow stronger. Bringing the Pieces Together Just as a quilter plans and puts love into the crafting of a quilt, the caring staff at Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center works with each patient, providing skilled healing with kindness and the emotional support needed to bring the pieces of one’s life together. “Be a Hero” is the fundraising effort to help purchase a linear accelerator and a companion CT scanner for Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center. This will enable staff to provide state-of-the-art radiation treatment to cancer patients. “The current unit has served us very well for years,” says Brad Kramer, M.D., radiation oncologist. “We need to replace it so we can continue to deliver the best care possible to cancer patients.” Our patients and those who have helped the Cancer Treatment Center over the years are the inspiration for the campaign. Every person who has battled cancer or found it in his or her heart to support the “Be a Hero” campaign is a hero. Share Your Story We want to share your stories of heroism. Please send your story and contact information to Sally-Ann Palcovich, director of the Sky Lakes Foundation, at SPalcovich@SkyLakes.org, and, with your permission, we’ll share your story and hope that it inspires others to help. The success of the “Be a Hero” campaign in bringing the best cancer treatments to Klamath Falls is in the hands of each and every one of us. No act of support, volunteerism or donation is either too small or too large. Our success will be defined by how well we come together as a community to help and support those around us. • WATCH AND LEARN MORE Radiation oncologist Brad Kramer, M.D., explains more about the need for a replacement linear accelerator at KFallsHero.org.
