MAKING A CONNECTION
Maria Litzendorf, MD, enjoys vascular surgery because of the ongoing patient
connection. “I enjoy having a one-on-one, long-term relationship with patients
in a process where I can make a difference,” she says. Despite the demanding
hours, “when you love what you do, it’s easy to do it with a smile.”
MY FIRST JOB was working in a movie theater.
KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Your cholesterol, blood pressure
and blood sugar levels affect the
health of your blood vessels. To
watch our quick 2-minute “Know
Your Numbers” video, go to
charlesregional.org/mhm and
click “Be Well Videos.”
IF I WEREN’T A DOCTOR, I would be a marine biologist.
RIGHT NOW ON MY iPOD, I’m listening to Alison Krauss.
MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT is anything with seafood, so I’m very
excited to get back to an area with an abundance of fresh seafood.
THE BEST HEALTH TIP I give patients is pay attention to your body, and
don’t ignore your feet!

MARYLAND’S HEALTH MATTERS
he multimedia health program “Jump
with Jill,” which uses upbeat music
to make nutrition fun and accessible
to kids and families, will be at this year’s
Charles County Fair, sponsored by UM
Charles Regional Medical Center.
But it’s always easy to get a taste of how
simple good nutrition can be. “Jump with
Jill” creator Jill Jayne, a registered dietitian,
shares these tips:
■ Put out a fruit bowl instead of a candy
dish.
■ Don’t even bring junk food into the house.
If it’s there, you’ll eat it!
■ Sneak vegetables into sauces by puréeing
them instead of leaving them chunky.
■ Teach kids to think like a scientist and use
their five senses to describe food, rather
than just calling it “good” or “gross.”
By the numbers
10
It can take kids up
to 10 tries to accept
a new food, so keep
offering! Even one bite
at a time can add up to
a new food preference.
