Commit to Quit EMErGEnCy CArE WHEn you nEEd IT The Emergency Department (ED) at Maryland General Hospital (MGH) was recently renovated to enhance patient-centered care. The new clinical area features the latest technologies to complement the expert emergency physicians, nurses and other health care providers. Advanced imaging resources—such as CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds—are available at all times to treat the 32,000 visits the department manages each year. In addition to cutting-edge technology, our physicians and nurses deliver the highest standards of compassionate care, helping patients and their loved ones cope with the stress of a medical emergency. MGH also serves as a Primary Stroke Center, which received a Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. “What people may not know is that our ED is staffed by physicians from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland Medical Center, and we care for numerous Medical Center ED patients in our ED at MGH. We also easily access the resources of the Medical Center, when needed, to enhance patient care. This partnership allows us to better serve our community,” says Adam J. Geroff, MD, assistant professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine, and chief of Emergency Medicine at MGH. The ED is also 100 percent compliant with quality standards, meeting the national standard for median time from arrival to admission. What this means for patients is quality care in a timely manner. Let Early last year, Maryland General Hospital paired up with the American Cancer Society’s Freshstart Smoking Cessation Program to help individuals quit smoking. That program is now open to the public. Through a group support system and a workbook to write down progress, participants learn the dangerous effects of smoking; coping skills to handle cravings; and how to live healthier, longer lives. Two certified facilitators are available at each class for guidance and support. Classes are offered once a week for four weeks. “People can really break their addiction once they are given the proper tools and support,” says Kate Sullivan, Maryland General Hospital Freshstart facilitator. “It is much easier to overcome the habit with others, versus doing it alone. We have seen people quit smoking and change their entire outlook on life. It’s inspirational.” Maryland General Hospital will be hosting four upcoming sessions: ■ Session A: April 10 through May 1, Wednesdays at 5 p.m. ■ Session B: April 11 through May 2, Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. ■ Session C: May 22 through June 12, Wednesdays at 5 p.m. ■ Session D: May 23 through June 13, Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. Sign Up Today If you are interested in joining a session, register by calling 410-225-UWIN (410-225-8946). marylandgeneral.org | spring 2013 5 http://www.marylandgeneral.org
