Maryland General Hospital
is now University of
Maryland Medical Center
Midtown Campus
I
n today’s world of healthcare, most medical
advances happen in large research hospitals, and
yet most care is delivered on a personal level,
in communities across the state. That’s why
the blending of hospitals of different strengths and
sizes can be for the better. In many rural areas, the
University of Maryland Medical System’s affiliated
hospitals are providing residents vastly improved
medicine in familiar settings, close to home. According to Sylvia Smith Johnson, President and CEO of
University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown
Campus (UMMC Midtown Campus), “Urban communities are no less deserving of that excellence.”
This past summer, a successful blending, progressively occurring over 14 years, culminated in an
exciting, stronger-than-ever affiliation. Maryland
General Hospital—a 132-year-old institution in
the heart of Baltimore—changed its name to UMMC
Midtown Campus.

PARTNERS IN HEALING
Successful blending begins with worthy partners—in
this case, one of those worthy partners was Maryland
General Hospital. Founded in 1881, the hospital distinguished itself in its steadfast dedication to serving
its West Baltimore residents. Evolving according to
the needs of the community, Maryland General began as a 50-bed teaching hospital, within three years,
tripled that number of beds, and within 10 years,
