Carter Carruthers Clinic at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (UMMC Midtown Campus) is offering a new program for young adults and adolescents through the Raise Connection Program. “The goal of the program is to help people ages 15 to 35 who are suffering from mental illness improve their ability to work or ■ Challenge your pessimistic thoughts. ■ Focus on realistic goals by making When you realize you’re having a negative internal conversation, interrupt your thoughts immediately. For example, if you find yourself thinking, “My office’s parking lot is overcrowded. If I’m five minutes late, I’ll never find a parking spot, so I’ll probably get fired for being late and I’ll never find another job again,” then it’s important to interrupt the downward spiral before it gets out of control. ■ Be proactive. Optimism is not just hoping. As with the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play. Spend some time thinking of ways in which you can ensure you get what you want. sure your goals are attainable so you aren’t reaching for the impossible. Focus on smaller goals, and once those come to fruition, you can make them progressively bigger. For instance, instead of setting a goal to lose 25 pounds, start with 10. You will feel so optimistic when you succeed, you’ll set your sights on the next step. ■ Be specific, for example, don’t set a goal to be nicer—nobody knows what that means. Set a goal to say “hello” to every new person you meet at work. You can measure the success of that.
