■ Challenge your pessimistic thoughts.
■ Focus on realistic goals by making
When you realize you’re having a negative internal conversation, interrupt your
thoughts immediately. For example, if
you find yourself thinking, “My office’s
parking lot is overcrowded. If I’m five
minutes late, I’ll never find a parking
spot, so I’ll probably get fired for being late and I’ll never find another job
again,” then it’s important to interrupt
the downward spiral before it gets out
of control.
■ Be proactive. Optimism is not just
hoping. As with the lottery, you can’t win
if you don’t play. Spend some time thinking of ways in which you can ensure you
get what you want.
sure your goals are attainable so you
aren’t reaching for the impossible. Focus
on smaller goals, and once those come to
fruition, you can make them progressively
bigger. For instance, instead of setting a
goal to lose 25 pounds, start with 10. You
will feel so optimistic when you succeed,
you’ll set your sights on the next step.
■ Be specific, for example, don’t set a
goal to be nicer—nobody knows what
that means. Set a goal to say “hello” to
every new person you meet at work. You
can measure the success of that.
Once you apply these strategies, there’s
a great chance you will feel better about
your life and the days ahead.
