FOUNDATION HALLS THE GENEROSITY OF PHILANTHROPY Meet some whose gifts helped make a difference in the Mid-Shore’s health care Welcome to the philanthropy edition of Maryland’s Health Matters! Thanks to wonderful supporters, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health is achieving extraordinary medical advances and has delivered innovative care to families throughout the Mid-Shore. F. Graham Lee Behind the progress are remarkable people such as physicians, employees and generous community members. You’ll read stories of donors from all walks of life. The common thread is, through their generosity, they all want to help others. These caring donors partner with our local hospital foundations to discover how to make gifts reflecting their values and passions. They also find financially comfortable ways to give with maximum impact. Within this issue, you’ll learn about generous gifts, exciting activity and medical successes here on the Mid-Shore. We’re proud of our geographical diversity; each Shore Regional Health location is excelling thanks to committed professionals —in health care, patient service and development. Please follow our progress and join the supporters investing in important work: world-class health care for our Mid-Shore region. F. Graham Lee Vice President of Philanthropy University of Maryland Shore Regional Health 14 MARYLAND’S HEALTH MATTERS Small Details, Big Impact Everyday Hero program lets grateful patients say “thanks” to employees who made a difference H ow do you thank someone for a small act that made a big difference in your life? At University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, kindness is a way of life. If thanked for a caring act, our employees would think “sure, no big deal.” To the contrary, say grateful visitors and patients! We want to let people know the difference they made, just when we needed it most. Give us a way to make the point that little things can make a big impact. That’s why, in 2008, The Memorial Hospital Foundation launched the Everyday Hero program. The program allows patients and family members to thank employees or volunteers at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton and UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester by making a donation in their name. Each honoree is celebrated in a special recognition ceremony at the hospital. Col. and Mrs. John Hyatt nominated Haider Sarraf, MD, of Shore Hospitalists Associates for inspiration he gave to the retired U.S. Marine Corps officer during a routine hospital discharge. Instead of merely signing paperwork and sending off his patient, Dr. Sarraf took time to encourage the colonel to give up smoking.  Donate now!
