Roxanne and Dylan Dean at last year’s Tour de Cure event May 18 | Tour de Cure Whether you’re a pro cyclist or haven’t jumped on a bike in years, all you need is a little leg power and some motivation to help raise money for vital diabetes research. The second annual Chesapeake Bay Tour de Cure cycling event will be May 18 along the Eastern Shore. Rides start at 10 miles, and go on up to the 100-mile Century ride, with all money raised beneﬁting the American Diabetes Association (ADA). “It’s not a race, it’s just a bike ride,” says Chrissy Nelson, RN, certiﬁed diabetes educator with Chester River Health. “It’s a lot of fun.” Last year, as captain for the Chester River Health System team, she and 24 others raised more than $9,000 for the ADA; this year’s goal is $10,000. Nelson couldn’t ride last year because of a stress fracture in her hip, but this year she and her husband have signed up to ride 55 miles. Roxanne Dean of Churchill cheered on her mom, who rode 65 miles last year while Dean, her husband and two sons volunteered at a rest stop. This year, her mom is trying to talk Dean into riding in the tour. “I would only do the 10-mile,” she says with a laugh. “But it was amazing to be there and see so many red riders. That jersey symbolized a kind of unity we’d never felt before.” GET BETTER WITH AGE HOMEPORTS THIRD ANNUAL AGING SYMPOSIUM Tuesday, March 26, Kent County Middle School, 402 E. Campus Ave., Chestertown Attendees will receive guidance in deciding health, safety and ﬁnancial issues in an effort to prolong and promote independent living. Keynote speaker will be Conrad May, MD, program director for the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and breakout discussions on speciﬁc topics will follow.
