A HEALTHY START A Magnet for Quality UM Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton earn Magnet redesignation University of Maryland Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton (including all ancillary services that comprised the former Shore Health System) have achieved prestigious Magnet redesignation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Shore Health System was first awarded Magnet Recognition status in 2009. Magnet Recognition is an organizational credential granted to exceptional health care organizations that meet specific standards set by the ANCC. To achieve Magnet Recognition, an organization must meet standards in quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. This designation, which requires application for renewal every four years, is the ultimate distinction for quality nursing care and a primary source of best nursing practices worldwide. Only 7 percent of all registered hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet Recognition status; there are only 401 Magnet-designated hospitals worldwide. UM Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton are two of the six hospitals in Maryland that are Magnet-designated. University of Members of the nursing management team celebrate the news of Magnet redesignation at UM Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton. Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown has begun the journey to Magnet designation and will be part of the next reapplication, which concludes in 2018. "The nursing staffs of Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton take great pride in the exceptional health care provided to the patients we serve," says Christopher Parker, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CHCQM, regional senior vice president of clinical services and chief nursing officer at UM Shore Regional Health. "Achieving redesignation from the Magnet Recognition Program is a tremendous honor and is further proof of what we know to be true-that our team is unparalleled in nursing excellence and their professional nursing practices." FIGHT INDOOR ALLERGIES Indoor allergies can really take a toll on your body-whether you get a runny nose, itchy eyes or sinus headaches. "One in five Americans suffers from some kind of allergies," says Timothy Schneider, MD, of Chesapeake ENT in Easton. "As the cooler weather approaches Timothy Schneider, MD and more time is spent inside, those with indoor allergies need to take steps to minimize the three main allergens-dust, pet dander and mold- in their homes." Dust: Wash bedding weekly in hot water (130°F) and dry it in a hot dryer. Consider allergy-proof covers for mattresses and pillows that can't be washed. Be sure to vacuum carpets at least once a week, preferably with a HEPA filtered vacuum. Change the heating/air conditioning system filters regularly-again, preferably with HEPA filters. Pet dander: If you have pets, keep them off furniture and out of the bedroom of anyone with pet dander allergies. Mold: Always turn on a fan while showering or bathing. Don't pile damp towels or laundry. Use a dehumidifier to keep the air and surfaces in your home dry, and keep houseplants away from those affected by allergy. Repair or correct any leaks under sinks or basements. EXPERIENCED CARE IS A CALL AWAY To make a new or follow-up appointment at Chesapeake ENT in Easton, call 410-820-9119.  Using some nasal decongestant sprays for extended periods can make your allergies worse. umshoreregional.org | Fall 2014 3 http://www.umshoreregional.org
