A HEALTHY START Exciting Therapies for Parkinson's Patients For people who have Parkinson's disease, lowered speaking volume, mumbled speech and difficulty walking are common effects. "Other people can't understand what they're saying," explains Diane Lorsong, MS, CCC/SLP, a rehabilitation therapist for University of Maryland Shore Regional Health's Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services. "But the person with Parkinson's thinks he or she is talking loudly enough-Parkinson's tricks the brain." Similarly, Parkinson's patients might think they are walking normally, but their gait is altered, which can compromise their mobility and balance. UM Shore Regional Health has rehabilitation therapists certified in , LSVT BIG© and LSVT LOUD© which are innovative treatments for Parkinson's patients. "LOUD, the speech component, is designed to teach patients not to listen to what their voice sounds like, but to know what it feels like to speak audibly," Lorsong says. "In BIG, the physical part of the program, patients are taught to walk 'big'-to take larger steps and swing their arms, improving their balance and mobility." In each therapy, 16 sessions take place over four weeks; custom schedules also can be arranged. Research has shown that the benefits of LSVT therapies can last for as long as two years.
